23 Million Euro Investment Boosts Cross-Border Tourism in Ireland

The Irish government has announced an allocation of up to €23 million from the Shared Island Fund to enhance cross-border tourism initiatives. This investment aims to develop and promote tourism in regions spanning both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, fostering economic growth and community engagement.

Key Projects and Investments:

1. Cuilcagh Lakelands UNESCO Global Geopark (Counties Cavan and Fermanagh):
   • Trail Development: Enhancing and connecting existing trails across the border to improve accessibility and visitor experience.
   • Community Interpretative Centre: Establishing a centre in Glangevlin to provide educational resources and promote local heritage.
2. Carlingford Lough (Counties Louth and Down):
   • Trail Network Expansion: Creating interconnected trailheads and water access points to link existing attractions and natural sites.
   • Destination Experience Strategy: Implementing a strategy to position Carlingford Lough as a premier outdoor tourism destination.
3. Sliabh Beagh (Counties Monaghan, Tyrone, and Fermanagh):
   • Cross-Border Trails: Developing 73 km of walking, cycling, and equestrian trails, complete with trailheads and gateways.
   • Artistic Integration: Incorporating artwork and sculptures along the trails to enhance cultural appeal and attract visitors.

These projects are collaborative efforts between Fáilte Ireland, Tourism Northern Ireland, and local authorities from the respective counties.

The goal is to boost tourism by improving infrastructure, enriching visitor experiences, and promoting the unique cultural and natural assets of these regions.

In addition to infrastructure development, a portion of the funding is designated for Tourism Ireland to market these regions internationally.

This initiative aims to attract more visitors from abroad, thereby stimulating local economies and fostering cross-border cooperation.

Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment, Peter Burke TD, emphasized the significance of this investment, stating that it will strengthen cross-border links and drive economic and social benefits to communities throughout the region. He highlighted tourism as a proven economic engine that supports new business and employment opportunities.

Northern Ireland’s Economy Minister, Dr. Caoimhe Archibald, also welcomed the funding, noting that tourism is a key economic driver across the island.

She expressed confidence that this investment will continue the success of increasing visitor numbers and tourism expenditure, aiming to exceed £2 billion by 2035.

Paul Kelly, CEO of Fáilte Ireland, highlighted the untapped tourism potential in the border regions. He expressed enthusiasm for working closely with partners to realize plans that will enhance offerings in both Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands and Ireland’s Ancient East regions.

The focus is on creating improved infrastructure and new employment opportunities, benefiting both visitors and local communities.

Alice Mansergh, Chief Executive of Tourism Ireland, underscored the importance of these projects in inspiring visitors to explore the island’s scenery, culture, and heritage. She noted that the initiatives align with Tourism Ireland’s strategy to bring greater economic benefits to various parts of the island.

John McGrillen, CEO of Tourism Northern Ireland, expressed his support, stating that the investment in new tourism infrastructure will help realize the tourism potential of the border region. He emphasized the value of collaboration with colleagues in Fáilte Ireland and local authorities to enhance the tourism offer on both sides of the border.

This substantial investment reflects a commitment to leveraging tourism as a means of economic and social development, while also strengthening cross-border relationships and cultural ties.
